Neakahnie Mountain, Oswald West State Park

This site is for advanced pilots who have a good reverse inflation techniqueDescription of Site: The launch for paragliders is most exhilarating. There is room for one glider to lay out. Slippery grass and the cliff below will discourage you from launching in wind that is not soarable. Excellent ground handling skills are required. There is a tree to avoid to the west just after getting in the air. Good flights have been obtained in wind of 6-9 mph, and 8-13 mph. Higher wind speeds may be too strong. If the gulls are soaring high overhead it could be too strong. The wind direction is best from the southwest. A south wind gives less l!ift. There is a wide lift band along the south side of the mountain and it is easy to bench up over the summit ridge to 2100 feet. Check penetration often. Watch the ocean for advancing clouds, wind lines, or white caps. More birds start to soar when the wi!nd picks up. Watch for small plane and helicopter traffic. This is a busy section of the Oregon coast and there is a small airport at Manzanita. The LZ can be the beach at Manzanita, the large boulders below the cliff (ankle busters), or Short Sand and Falc!on Cove beaches to the north. In light wind, it may be possible to land in the brush to the north of launch and west of 101, be aware of rotors. Directions to site: Drive Hwy 101 north of Manzanita or south of Arch Cape into Oswald West State Park. Park at the largest tourist viewpoint parking area between mile posts 40 and 41. It faces south and is marked by a historic rockwork m!arker. The launch is the small 45¡ grassy slope below the rock wall.
